Start from the question, not the chart gallery:

• Comparing categories? A column chart (or a bar chart when labels are long). • Showing a trend over time? A line chart. • Showing parts of one whole? A pie or doughnut — but only with a few slices. • Showing a relationship between two numbers? A scatter chart.
