Coding procedures beyond the office visit — the global surgical package, multiple procedures, radiology components, lab panels, vaccines and injections.
The global surgical package
Slide 1 / 5A surgical code includes more than the cut itself. The 'global package' bundles: • the pre-operative visit the day before or day of surgery (for major surgery), • the procedure and typical anesthesia by the surgeon (local/topical), • routine post-op care during the global period (0, 10 or 90 days, set by Medicare).
You don't bill routine follow-ups separately during the global period. Unrelated problems or complications needing a return to the OR are reported with modifiers.
