Diabetes categories

| E10 | Type 1 diabetes | Body makes no insulin; always insulin-treated |
| E11 | Type 2 diabetes | Default when type isn't documented |
| E08 | Due to an underlying condition | e.g. pancreatitis, Cushing — code the condition first |
| E09 | Drug or chemical induced | e.g. steroid-induced |
| E13 | Other specified diabetes | e.g. after pancreatectomy |
| O24.- | Diabetes in pregnancy / gestational | Pregnancy chapter takes priority |
| R73.03 | Prediabetes | Not diabetes — don't use E11 |
